Obituary of Gregory Lynn Dawson

Gregory Lynn Dawson, 57, of Woodville passed away January 23, 2017. He was born in Lufkin, TX on August 21, 1959 to Winfred James and Beulah Ann Goins Dawson. Greg attended Tyler Junior College and worked as a police officer in Whitehouse and Tyler, TX. He worked for Texas Department of Criminal Justice for twenty-seven years, working at the Hightower Unit in Dayton; the Goodman Unit in Jasper, TX, and the Gib Lewis Unit in Woodville where he retired as warden. Greg served as warden at the Newton Private Correctional Unit and was the Jail Adminstrator for Angelina County. He most recently served as the Justice of the Peace for Tyler County Precinct 2. Greg also mentored many youth in Tyler County through the 4-H and FFA organizations. He was highly respected and greatly loved by everyone he encountered and he will be greatly missed. Greg is survived by his loving wife Martha Dawson of Woodville; daughter Kalli Ann Dawson of Woodville; sister Susan Kilcrease and husband Jerald of Brookeland; nephew Robert Dawson of Pineland; nephew Todd Dawson of Hemphill; niece Lindsey Dalbasco of Hemphill; niece Kaylee Kilcrease of College Station; uncle Larry Goins of Granbury; aunt Patsy Going Lowery of Huntington; and aunt Sherry Dawson Ward of McQueen, AR. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James Gary Dawson. Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Woodville, TX. He will be buried at Campground Cemetery in Woodville. Visitation was held at Riley Funeral Home from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Serving as pallbearers are Robert Dawson, Cody Riley, James Hayes, Chad Hooper, Mark Crager, and Steve Boyd. Honorary pallbearer is Todd Dawson. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
