Obituary of Ben Hershel Anderson
Ben Hershel Anderson, 88, passed away January 7, 2014 at his home in Woodville. He was born the fifth child of eleven to Sam Anderson and Nellie Maddox Anderson in Orange, Tx. He left school at an early age to work on tugboats with his dad to help out at home, and later got his GED. He attended trade school at what is now Sam Houston State University, for a short time as a young man. He drove a taxi in Orange in his early twenties until he enlisted in the Army in the late 1940s. He served in the Army in the last part of WWII but never left stateside. After being discharged from the regular Army, he enlisted in the Army Reserves, and was immediately deployed to Korea. He was given a medical discharge in 1952, and sent home after developing severe frostbite in the mountains of Korea. In 1962 he married Lilly May Salles and they lived in Orange, TX until 1968 when they bought a house just outside Spurger on FM 2992, and moved up here. He continued to work as a truck driver for the Teamster’s Local in Beaumont, until his retirement in 1985. A few years after his wife passed away in 2002, he moved to Woodville to be close to his family and closer to town. He is preceded in death by his wife Lilly May. He is survived by Stepson Curtis Price of Lumberton; Stepdaughter Lilly (Cissy) Brooks of Woodville; Stepson Carl Price of Lumberton; Granddaughter Teresa Mannino and husband Joe of Woodville; Grandson Jesse Brooks, Jr. of Norman, OK; Granddaughter Kari Steed and husband Clint of Winonna, TX; Grandson, Carl Price, Jr. of Lumberton; Great-grandsons Logan Brooks of Winonna, TX and Linus Mannino of Woodville, Darren and Tristen Brooks of Norman, OK, Trea Hutto of Fred, TX, Zeke Mannino of Silsbee, TX; and Great-granddaughters, Lana and Lena Mannino of Woodville as well as numerous other great-grand children, nieces and nephews. A visitation was held Friday, January 10 from 5-8 pm at Riley Funeral Home. Graveside services were held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 1 pm at Turner Branch Cemetery in Spurger.
